Canadian Credit Cards at US Gas Pumps

Snowbirds may encounter problems when using their credit cards at some U.S. gas pumps. Certain gas stations have implemented a zip code validation for patrons wishing to use credit cards to pay for gas directly at the pump. This has become a hassle for non-U.S. residents, as the gas transaction is immediately terminated when a valid zip code is not entered within a specified time limit. The reason given for this new implementation has been to reduce high losses due to stolen credit cards, especially in south Florida. It appears that the validation requirement is regional, with individual gas station operators responsible for the zip code implementation, as opposed to being brand-mandated. Therefore, it’s impossible to know beforehand which stations to avoid, if you’re planning to use your credit card at the pump. Of course, you still have the option to pay with cash or to use your credit card at the counter.
