Over 50 - You're Not Immune to STDs

Sexual activity in the over-50 crowd has increased significantly in the last five years as a result of access to erectile dysfunction medication and the disintegration of taboos regarding intimacy. Along with this increased activity has come an increased incidence of sexually transmitted diseases and infections.

Ten per cent of all AIDS cases reported in the U.S. are in the over-50 age group. Chlamydia infections have increased by more than 40% from 2005 to 2009 in persons over age 55. There has been a general increase in urinary tract infections in seniors and 43% of the men questioned in the study stated that their last sexual encounter was with a casual dating partner - not a spouse.

Using  a condom is absolutely necessary when engaging in a non-exclusive relationship. An honest and open discussion with your doctor and your partner will help ensure that you and those to whom you are closest can continue to enjoy a healthy, active lifestyle.
