There are some foods you'd never expect to cause tooth decay...it's not just the sweet stuff that you've warned your kids about. The bacteria in your mouth loves sugars and starches...when you don't brush your teeth after eating, plaque utilizes those sugars and starches to create acids that eat away (pardon the pun) at the tooth enamel. As these acids can work for 20 minutes or longer after you've eaten, your dental health also depends on WHEN you're eating. Foods consumed as part of a meal are not as dangerous, as more saliva is released, helping to wash food from the mouth. If you're avoiding cookies as a bedtime snack, remember that fruits, milk, bread, cereals and vegetables can all cause decay so, if you're going for that final treat of the day, be sure to brush your teeth afterwards.
