MOSQUITO SEASON
Want to keep the mosquito population down this year? Even more important than ever with the presence of the "west nile virus". Add Olive oil to stagnant pools of water such as puddles, rain barrels, etc.. About one tablespoon of olive oil on the waters' surface should do the trick.
FLOWER POWER
In order to extend the life of cut flowers, try adding Listerine mouthwash to the water. The ratio should be about 2 ounces of mouthwash to 1 gallon of water, or 64:1. The Listerine contains ingredients such as sucrose and bactericide. Both are excellent food sources for plants.
SLUGS & SNAILS
Are these pesky creepy crawlers infiltrating your garden?
Try these "home made" methods for keeping the population down.
- Wood Ashes! Snails and Slugs hate wood ashes. Sprinkle the ashes around your planted flowers and vegetables.
- Beer! Fill a plastic tub with beer and place it in the garden. The slugs will creep in for a sip and drink themselves to death.
- Flat Boards! Place a few old boards in the garden. Every morning turn the board over, you will find that it will be covered with those little guys taking a snooze. Which will allow you to dispose of them accordingly.
ROSE'S FAVOURITE FOOD
Want your roses to be happy and well nourished? Try burying an old brown banana at the base of your rose bush. Throughout the season, place peels on the soil surrounding the bush. Banana's act as a time releaser as they decompose. Roses love soaking up the calcium, magnesium, sulfur, and phosphates contained in bananas and their peels.
DID YOU KNOW...
More than 50% of the people in the world have never made or received a telephone call.
- People say "Bless You" when you sneeze because when you sneeze you're heart stops for a fraction of a second.
- In a study of 200,000 ostriches over a period of 80 years, no one reported a single case where an ostrich buried its head in the sand.
- It is impossible to kiss your elbow. Try it!
- The first owner of the Marlboro Company died of lung cancer. So did all of the "Marlboro Men", is there a message here?
HISTORY OF WORDS
- In Scotland, a new game was invented. It was entitled Gentlemen Only Ladies Forbidden...and thus the word GOLF entered into the English language.
- In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes. When you pulled on the ropes, the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on. Hence the phrase "goodnight, sleep tight".
