Tips to Make Moving Easy

Moving is a tiresome task. Finding a reliable mover, however, can help lift some of the weight from your shoulders – literally! When looking for a mover, keep this advice in mind:

  • Ask for three estimates and have each mover come to your home. Never accept an estimate over the telephone.
  • Don't sign a contract on the spot.
  • Remember that the cheapest service may not be the best.
  • Ask for references and call them.
  • Check with your insurance broker or company for the insurance you will need.
  • Compare estimates and make sure you understand the details, such as extra services and exclusions.
  • Ask if the moving company will ship your goods using its own staff.
  • If in doubt, insist on visiting the mover's facility, especially if storage is involved.
  • Avoid paying large deposits in advance.
  • Don't rely on anyone else to move important records, documents, deeds, and jewelry. Carry these items yourself.

For more information about movers, contact the Ministry of Consumer and Business Services at (416) 326-8800 in Toronto or toll-free at 1-800-889-9768, or visit the website at www.cbs.gov.on.ca.

Safety and Online Shopping

Online shopping has become the quickest and least stressful way to shop. Unfortunately, this type of shopping has its perils. Before you purchase anything online, take note of the following advice:

  • Watch out for the latest online scam called "phishing". Fake or copycat websites are designed to trick consumers into revealing their personal and financial information. Be cautious when clicking on an unfamiliar website, e-mail, or link.
  • Before you provide your credit card number, look for security features, such as encrypted websites.
  • Avoid impulse buying and keep track of your purchases.
  • Review return policies and warranties, and be wary of hidden costs.
  • Read the fine print and be sure to print and keep copies of all purchase records and transactions.

For more information about online shopping, contact the Ministry of Consumer and Business Services at (416) 326-8800 in Toronto or toll-free at 1-800-889-9768, or visit the website at www.cbs.gov.on.ca.
