Government Relations Committee

INTRODUCTIONThe Government Relations Committee and the Board of Directors are pleased to present this Special Report. More and more frequently we receive inquiries from our members across the country, by phone, letter and increasingly e-mail, asking us for information regarding a particular situation in their province. With 10 provinces, the territories and just as many issues, the time seemed right to produce a comprehensive document to help our members better understand both the current situation and the CSA's position. When the CSA was first conceived and created, we really had only a single issue out of country medical costs and the increasing trend away from proper funding. We are, and have been involved in a multitude of issues including, on federal and provincial levels, the Canada Health Act, voting rights, border-crossing issues, financial regulations for foreign investing, passports, pension reform, residency requirements, out of country medical payments and prescription drug policies. This is by no means a simple prospect any longer. Not only has the number of issues multiplied, so has the complexity of the process. Lobbying is a sophisticated and expensive process. Special interest groups pull politicians in a dozen different directions. This places the onus on us to prepare and make clear, well-thought-out and concise presentations to government ministers and their staff.
We as an association have a clear and direct responsibility to be vigilant and proactive in the protection of our rights and freedoms. I would like to take a moment to thank each of those members who have taken it upon themselves to join us in our fight by supporting the Special Action fund. Accomplishing real change can be expensive, and we appreciate and thank you for your support of our attempts to gain the hearts and minds of the politicians. I hope you will find this report informative and thought-provoking. |
