The Canadian Snowbird Association is pleased to announce its board of directors for the 2008-2010 term of office. The Canadian Snowbird Association is a national not-for-profit advocacy organization dedicated to actively defending and improving the rights and privileges of Canadian travellers.

The Canadian Snowbird Association (CSA) is pleased to announce the election of J.D. (Don) Gardiner as the association's new president who will also serve as a director for Atlantic Canada for the term 2008 – 2010.

Mr. Gardiner has had a long and distinguished career in the private sector and as an entrepreneur. He is the founder, president and CEO of the Gardiner Group of Companies, one of Atlantic Canada's most successful commercial and real estate companies. He is an honorary life member of the International Real Estate Federation which represents 57 countries worldwide.

Mr. Gardiner has served as a senior volunteer with several organizations. A lifetime member of the Canadian Snowbird Association, he has served on the CSA board of directors since 2004 holding the positions of treasurer and first vice-president. He is the past-president of the Canadian Lung Association who awarded him a lifetime membership for serving 20 years on the board. Don has also been active in the area of veteran's affairs. He helped raise funds to develop a permanent memorial gardens for the veterans of the navy, army, air force and merchant marine in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Mr. Gardiner established the Gardiner Medical Research Trust Fund over 15 years ago which supports research for rheumatic and other immunological diseases.

In 2000, Mr. Gardiner was appointed as a Member of the Order of Canada.

The Canadian Snowbird Association (CSA) is pleased to announce the election of Robert (Bob) Slack as the association's new first vice-president and director for Ontario for the term 2008 – 2010.

Mr. Slack has had a long and distinguished career in education. As a teacher, principal and later supervisor of student teachers, he began his teaching career at the Galt Roman Catholic School Board, continued with the Carleton Roman Catholic School Board, and later the State University of New York. During his career in education he was actively involved in the establishment of classes and programs for dependently handicapped students. For over ten years Bob was a presenter of retirement planning workshops for the Ontario Teachers' Federation. He also served as an educational consultant for the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture. In addition to a regular teaching career, he was employed as a part-time lecturer at the University of Ottawa as well as served as a municipal councillor for the Township of Goulbourn.

A member of the Canadian Snowbird Association, Mr. Slack has been a volunteer with several organizations. He has served in numerous capacities with the Catholic Principals' Council of Ontario, including two terms as president. A past-president of the Richmond District Lions Club and Richmond Snowrovers Snowmobile Club, he has also been active in minor hockey.

The Canadian Snowbird Association (CSA) is pleased to announce the election of James (Jim) Sherb as the association's new second vice-president and director for Western Canada for the term 2008 – 2010.

Mr. Sherb has had a long and distinguished career in resource management. As a dedicated civil servant of thirty-five years with the British Columbia Ministry of Forests, he held training and management positions in silviculture, and has been active in the teaching of forest management. Mr. Sherb served on the Forestry Advisory Board at the College of New Caledonia, as a director of Forestry Continuing Studies at the University of Northern B.C., and as a facilitator with the Forest Management Institute of B.C.

Mr. Sherb has served as a senior volunteer with several organizations. A lifetime member of the Canadian Snowbird Association, he has served on the CSA board of directors since 2002 holding the position of director for Western Canada. As a member of the Toastmasters International, he achieved the position of Distinguished Toastmaster in 1990, and served as district governor in 1995. The Diabetes Society, the Cancer Society, the Alzheimer's Society, and the SPCA have also benefited from his volunteer spirit. Mr. Sherb has also served the Sea Cadets, and has served the public as a fire information officer. He is currently an active member and hike leader of the Desert Trails Association in Palm Springs, California.

James Sherb and his wife Alayne reside in Kamloops, British Columbia.

The Canadian Snowbird Association (CSA) is pleased to announce the election of Brock Sharpe as the association's new treasurer and director for Québec for the term 2008 – 2010.

Mr. Sharpe retired in 2001, ending a long career in the commercial real estate development and construction business in Ottawa. Prior to this, he was the director of Administration for the Civil Service Co-Operative, the financial institution for Canadian Federal Public Servants. In his early years he was the manager of the Canadian Figure Skating Association and was responsible for the day-to-day running of the largest amateur sports governing body in Canada.

Mr. Sharpe is a 41-year member of the International Barbershop Harmony Society and achieved numerous successes, singing and coaching in choruses and quartets. For many years, he worked at the board level in the Ontario District and taught Public Relations for the Barbershop Harmony Society across Canada and the USA.

Mr. Sharpe is fluent in French and as a young boy lived in France, travelling extensively throughout central Europe.

Brock Sharpe and his wife Gail live in Ladysmith, Quebec and winters in south Florida.

GERALD (GERRY) BRISSENDEN

The Canadian Snowbird Association (CSA) is pleased to announce the election of John Foster as the association's new secretary and director for Central Canada for the term 2008 – 2010.

Mr. Foster has had a long and distinguished career in education, as a teacher, guidance counsellor and vice-principal. He began and ended his teaching career with the same school board, the Swift Current Public School Division. During his thirty-four years he participated on all the committees of the division. He also served as the director of the golf and curling clubs and past member of the Kiwanis Club. He also served as Public Relations and Marketing director for the Swift Current Broncos of the Western Hockey League (1986 – 1994).

John and his wife Joan reside in Swift Current, Saskatchewan in the summer and Brownsville, Texas in the winter.

The Canadian Snowbird Association (CSA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Gerald (Gerry) Brissenden as the association's new immediate past-president and director for Ontario for the term 2008 – 2010. This appointment follows his four-year exemplary service as association president for 2004 – 2008 and his re-election to a second term 2006 – 2008.

Mr. Brissenden has had a long and distinguished career in sales and marketing. He has held the position of vice-president of sales and marketing with HomeLife Realty Services, Allied Van Lines, and Mayflower Van Lines. Mr. Brissenden formerly served with the Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal Air Force, and the Metropolitan Police of London (U.K.).

Mr. Brissenden has served as a senior volunteer with several organizations. A lifetime member of the Canadian Snowbird Association, he has served on the CSA board of directors since 2000 holding the position of treasurer before being elected president in 2002. He has also served as both president and vice-president of Sales and Marketing Executives of Toronto. Mr. Brissenden has been an avid promoter of soccer in Canada, serving as the first chairman in the history of the Canadian Soccer Coaches Association, and serving in senior capacities with community soccer groups in Ontario.

Mr. Brissenden and his wife Joan reside in Lagoon City (Brechin), Ontario.


NANCY HOPCRAFT, B.A.

RONALD L. (RON) STEEVES

The Canadian Snowbird Association (CSA) is pleased to announce the re-election of Nancy Hopcraft as the association's director for Ontario (representing Northern Ontario) for the term 2008 - 2010.

Ms. Hopcraft has had a long and distinguished career in education. She is a past president of the Timmins Women Teachers' Association, and a member of the Retired Teachers of Ontario. She is also a past director of the Porcupine Branch of the Victorian Order of Nurses.

Ms. Hopcraft has served as a volunteer with several organizations. A lifetime member of the Canadian Snowbird Association, she has served on the CSA board of directors since 2002 holding the position of association secretary. She is a past president of the Kinettes, a lay preacher with the United Church of Canada and pastoral care visitor at the Timmins and District Hospital. Her extensive involvement with the Canadian Cancer Society includes acting as a motivational speaker and volunteer support worker for persons coping with cancer. She has also served as an internet review member of breast cancer web sites in addition to taking part in the annual Relay for Life. She has twice been voted Woman-of-of-the-Year for Beta Sigma Phi.

Nancy Hopcraft and her husband Gordon reside in Timmins, Ontario.

The Canadian Snowbird Association (CSA) is pleased to announce the election of Ronald L. (Ron) Steeves as one of the association's new directors for Atlantic Canada for the term 2008 – 2010.

Mr. Steeves recently retired following a proud and distinguished career in municipal government having served as the director of Transit & Parking Services and director of Administrative Services with the city of Fredericton, New Brunswick. He also served as project executive (investment) in economic development – Enterprise Fredericton where he played an integral role liaising with the provincial government attracting new national and international firms to the greater Fredericton area. He also served as a commissioner of oaths for the Province of New Brunswick.

The highlight of Mr. Steeves' years of volunteering was the recent recognition, by Rotary International, with the presentation of the esteemed Paul Harris Fellowship Award.

In his spare time, he has also served as a volunteer firefighter with the Riverview Fire-Rescue, auxiliary constable with the New Brunswick Highway Patrol; past-president of Big Brothers/Big Sisters; board of directors with Jobs Unlimited – an employment agency for physically and mentally challenged adults; chair of the United Way campaign; Santa Claus for 32 years visiting children's wards in hospital, senior citizen manors, Transition House, etc; a provincially licensed and bonded auctioneer for 28 years conducting dozens of fund-raising auctions yearly that raised several hundred thousand dollars for local charities and service clubs. During the winter months, he continues to serve as the voluntary coordinator of the New Brunswick Picnic in St. Petersburg, Florida.

LAWRENCE BARKER, RPR
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Effective November 1, 2003, the Canadian Snowbird Association (CSA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Lawrence Barker as the association's executive director and chief staff officer.

Mr. Barker brings over twenty years of association management experience to the CSA. His previous association work includes serving as executive director with the Grand Valley Construction Association (GVCA), executive director with the Ontario Building Officials Association (OBOA), and director of member services with the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT). Prior to his career in the non-for-profit association sector, he was employed for a number of years in both the private sector as well as with the Ontario government.

Mr. Barker and his wife Marie reside in Fenelon Falls (City of Kawartha Lakes), Ontario.
