| CSA revisits “Retired Persons Visa” |
Winter 2009 > Issue 73 Several years ago, when Bill McCollum was a United States congressman from the Orlando area (he is now the attorney general for the state of Florida), the Canadian Snowbird Association was involved in supporting a bill in congress to create a “Retired Persons Visa.” The bill had been introduced to Congress by Congressman McCollum and, through a couple of sessions of Congress, had progressed to the point of a hearing before a subcommittee of the judiciary committee. Of course, it was an iconic triumph for a black man to become president of a country that, 150 years earlier, had institutionalized slavery, but there are any number of gifted men and women of colour who could run for this or any office. Winter 2009 > Issue 73 Taxes that force people to pay more for essentials – such as their home heating and hydro bills – are particularly painful. Taxes that drive up the cost of living by increasing taxes on gas, realtors’ fees, condo maintenance fees, moving costs, home appraisals and title insurance will only increase the challenge of the current recession.
