By the time you read this, Canada's 41st general election will have come to a close and we will know which party will form our new federal government. To ensure that our concerns received the attention they deserved, the CSA sent letters to the party leaders asking them to clarify their position on the issues that are important to our members. Although the day-to-day provision of most health-care services is the responsibility of our provincial and territorial governments, the Canada Health Act is federal legislation. The vast majority of the provinces are not meeting their funding obligations under the portability principle of the Act. Therefore, it is up to the federal government to take action and enforce the Act. Once we received the replies from each party which took the time to respond, we posted them on our website at www.snowbirds.org so that everyone could see where the party leaders stood before casting their vote. Winter 2010 > Issue 77
The United States' 2010 midterm elections are now in the books and the political landscape has shifted significantly. Elections were held for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives. Republicans made a net gain of 64 seats from Democrats, thus giving them control over the house for the first time since 2006. This represents the highest house victory for any party since 1948 and the highest of any midterm election since 1938. Read more

The third edition of The Canadian Travellers' Report Card was officially released at the Snowbird Extravaganza in Lakeland, Florida this past January. Since then, a copy has been sent to every federal, provincial and territorial elected official in Canada. CSA officials have also been actively discussing the report with members of both the print and electronic media from coast to coast. Read more

As our members from Ontario may be aware, we are heading into the fourth month of a strike at all DriveTest locations throughout the province. This strike has halted many services including new-driver tests, road tests and driver's licence renewals. The strike began on August 21, and it was widely thought at that time that it would be settled relatively quickly. Clearly, this is not the case. Read more
