• The oldest active brewery in America is D.G. Yeungling & Son, which brews beer in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1829.

• In 1989, Canadian actress Pamela Anderson went to a Canadian Football League game in Vancouver and caused the crowd to cheer when she was shown on the stadium screen wearing a Labatt's T-shirt. The brewery immediately offered her a modelling contract and, on several occasions, she appeared in Playboy Magazine.

• Jack Daniel's is known for its famous Tennessee whiskey. The real Jack Daniel is buried in Lynchburg, Tennessee, where the company's headquarters is located.

• Canada's first light beer was Cool Light, which was test-marketed by Labatt's in 1972 in British Columbia and Alberta.

• Denver, Colorado proclaims itself "The King of Beers." The Mile High City's website reads: "Move over Milwaukee...Denver is the King of Beers," and says that more beer is brewed in Denver than in any other American city.

• America's oldest winery is the Brotherhood Winery in the Hudson Valley in Washingtonville, New York. It was established in 1839.

• Known as "America's greatest beer celebration," the Great American Beer Festival takes place every fall in Denver, Colorado where, over three days, more than 49,000 attendees pour down 36,000 gallons of more than 2,200 brands of beer.

• Southern Comfort, a popular liqueur, was developed in New Orleans by bartender M.W. Heron.

• When John Molson began brewing beer in Montreal in 1786, a bottle of his ale cost five cents.

• Drink humorist James Thurber was referring to the martini when he uttered the famous phrase: "One martini is all right. Two are too many, and three are not enough."

• What's really the difference between lager and ale? In the brew process, ales are produced by top-fermenting yeasts and lagers are produced by bottom-fermenting yeasts. Ales generally have a more robust taste, with hints of complex and unique flavours known as "esters" and are best when consumed cool, rather than cold. Lagers generally have a more pure taste of the traditional hops and malt. They usually go down smoother than ales, and are less thick.
