Three years and counting until Dec. 21, 2012, the predicted end of time. Author Gregg Braden reassures us that it's not the end of the world, but the end of a "world age"– the 5,125-year cycle that it takes our earth and our solar system to reach a specific alignment in their journey through the heavens.  Only five generations in the past 26,000 years have experienced the shift of world ages.  We will be the sixth.

This specific date was calculated by the ancient Mayan and corroborated by subsequent civilizations and seers (i.e. Nostradamus).  Braden spent more than 20 years searching remote monasteries and temples in Egypt, Peru and Tibet to find their encoded secrets.

Using his extensive research, Braden developed a Time Code Calculator.  It's based on the theory that if you know where to look in the past, you know what to expect under the same conditions in the present and future. As an example of the accuracy of the Time Code Calculator, Braden cited the Pearl Harbour surprise attack on the U.S. as making Sept. 11's surprise attack on the World Trade Center completely predictable.  He also gives instructions on calculating your own Time Code for the key events and relationships in your own life.

The term fractal time comes from the merging of the modern discoveries of nature's patterns (fractals) with the ancient views of a cyclical universe.

The Secret of 2012 and a New World Age is the subtitle of the book.  Speculations for the new millennium range from hopeful – "the emergence of a non decentralized information society" – to a frightening headline from India; "Computer Models Predict Magnetic Pole Reversal in Earth and Sun Can Bring End to Civilization in 2012."  Whatever lies ahead, Armageddon or a second Eden, it will be new.  When one world age ends, another cycle begins.

Although the issues addressed in Fractal Time are complex, Gregg Braden manages to make it reader-friendly, even for those of us who are physics challenged.  He uses time fractals to describe the 20-year presidential curse that started in 1840 with the death of then-president William Henry Harrison, followed every 20 years by assassinations or assassination attempts.  The coincidental patterns (fractals) surrounding the assassinations of Abraham Lincoln and John F. Kennedy are positively startling.

In describing the mystery of the number phi, Braden refers to the successful novel The Da Vinci Code.  His descriptions of his research travels are lyrical – vivid travelogues.

Braden asserts that with our knowledge of repeating cycles, we can calculate "hot dates"…the greatest threats of war or peace opportunities.  Experts predicted the stock market crash a full 14 months before the actual crash of 2008 occurred.

As Dec. 2012 approaches, the question is will we learn from end-of-cycle periods in the past, periods of turbulence and trauma.  Braden suggests that we face the time of change with global prayer, sensitive dialogue and measured tolerance.
