Getting to Meet You!

Summer 2003 CSANews Issue 47  |  Posted date : Apr 20, 2007.Back to list

As always, I thoroughly enjoy meeting my fellow Canadians at the many social events throughout Florida. And all the talk about fewer Canadians wintering in the south sure is misleading. For example, the Nova Scotia Picnic held in February at Seminole, Florida (St. Pete) attracted more than 600 people. Several weeks later, the Prince Edward Island Picnic drew more than 700 to Fort Desoto Park at St. Petersburg. Here are some of the pictures and, in some cases, the people to contact - just in case you would like to join them next year. We'll publish more pictures in future issues.

Pic 2: Citrus Park Canada Day
Always a popular event, this Canada Day celebration is held annually in February at Citrus Park located at Bonita Springs (between Naples and Fort Myers), Florida. This year's event was the largest ever, with 375 tickets sold. The people responsible for putting it all together are - (L-R) Lise Beaudoin, Florida, Marilyn McKinnon, Aylmer, Ontario, Hector Lucier, McGregor, Ontario, Joan Dawson, Peterborough, Ontario, Jeri Hickson, Bonita Springs, Florida, Georges Morris, Montreal, Quebec and Hank Binnendyk, Egmondville, Ontario. For information, call Hank Binnendyk at (519) 522-0416.

Pic 3: Schalamar Creek Can/Am Golf Tournament
This tournament is a resident-only, mixed-match play over three days and is an annual event at Schalamar Creek Golf & Country Club located just east of Lakeland, Florida. The U.S.A. defeated the Canucks, but only by three points. Here are some of the folks who organize the event - (L-R) Lorraine Coughlan, Pickering, Ontario, Gail Brewer, Scarborough, Ontario, Vickie Kordiuk, Gravenhurst, Ontario, Bruce Brewer, Ruth Gray, Michigan and Jim Seel, Truro, Nova Scotia.

Pic 4: Westwinds Canada Day
Here's a bevy of beauties who caught our attention while celebrating Canada Day at Westwinds, a manufactured-home community at Bradenton, Florida. These guys presented quite a colourful fashion show that took a lot of nerve - believe me - because they took quite a razzing from the REAL ladies. (L-R) Earl Hurlburt, Cambridge Narrows, New Brunswick, Struan Hale, Truro, Nova Scotia, Ted McCormick, Guelph, Ontario, Leo Van Rooy, New Hamburg, Ontario, Norm Cole, Melagash, Nova Scotia and Art Cosgrove, Cambridge Narrows, New Brunswick.

Pic 5: Cross Creek Canada Day
This was the first year I attended this Canada Day celebration at Cross Creek RV Park located at Arcadia in south-central Florida. Let me tell you, they know how to have a good time - starting with the "draught beer!" Waiting for their turn at the tap - (L-R) Benny Iacobaccio, Montreal, Quebec, Bill Woodhouse, Washago, Ontario, Jacques Brisebois, St. Eustache, Quebec, Gene Girard, Woodslee, Ontario, Andre Pelosse, Chicoutimi, Quebec and Eloi Marcaux, Sherbrooke, Quebec.

Pic 6: Nova Scotia Picnic
There were 630 people actually registered at the 13th Annual NS Picnic held in February on the shores of Lake Seminole Park, Seminole, Florida near St. Petersburg. There was plenty of self-made entertainment throughout the park and the attendees didn't hesitate to sing along! Pictured is the organizational committee, all from Nova Scotia, of course! - (L-R) Jeanne MacCara, Antigonish, Al Pettepas, New Glasgow, Nancy Richards, Halifax, and Susan and Aubrey Ryan, Tatamagouche. For information, call Aubrey Ryan at (902) 657-2814.
