Last week a medical colleague sent me an email message to review
a videotape under the heading “idoctor” – which I promptly did. It
was the first time I had heard of a smartphone being used to assist
in diagnosing illness. The video shows NBC’s Dr. Nancy Snyderman’s
interview with cardiologist Dr. Eric Topol and his use of a cellphone
and a device called AliveCor to show an electrocardiogram (ECG).
With this new discovery, he was able to confirm that a fellow passen-
ger on his flight was indeed having a heart attack. The plane made
an emergency landing and the patient survived.
