Transit to Canada from the U.S.
Posted date : Sep 10, 2026.

I am arriving in the U.S. from another country in order to transit to Canada. The flight arrives late at night and the connecting flight to Canada can only be made the next day, for a stay in the U.S. of fewer than 24 hours. One week later, I will be returning to the U.S. for a vacation. I was wondering if the authorities consider the one-week stay in Canada as being in the U.S. the entire time, because my connecting flight was not the same day as the arriving flight.

Ed.: No! While you are in the U.S. waiting for your flight to Canada, you are considered to be “In Transit” and both that one day and the following days spent in Canada would not be counted as days spent in the U.S.
