The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has updated its guidance regarding the U.S. alien registration requirement, and the change is particularly relevant to Canadians who travel to the United States using NEXUS.
NEXUS members who were last admitted to the United States through NEXUS are now considered to be already registered. USCIS specifically lists individuals last admitted through Trusted Traveler Programs, including NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST and Global Entry, among those who are considered already registered.
As a result, these travellers do not need to submit Form G-325R simply because they are staying in the United States for 30 days or longer. This represents a change from previous guidance.
Travellers should note that the wording applies to individuals who were last admitted through a qualifying Trusted Traveler Program; it does not simply apply to anyone who holds a NEXUS membership.
While this is an important step forward, the CSA continues to lobby the U.S. federal government to eliminate the registration requirement for all long-term Canadian travellers to the United States. The CSA will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as further information becomes available.
