Cross Border Estate Inheritance

A few months ago, my brother passed away. Although his will, drawn up in Ontario, clearly specifies that my husband and I are the beneficiaries of his entire estate - including his portion of a condominium in Florida which we three jointly owned - friends have told us that his will is not going to be sufficient for us to wholly acquire the property because the deed (which was drawn up by the seller,s lawyer in Chicago) does not include the provision "with right of survivorship..."   Read more...

Innacurate Information About Florida License Renewal
Posted date : May 27, 2010.
The Snowbird Alert information on page 6 of issue 73 is not accurate. The "renewal" of a Florida driver’s license is straightforward. Canadians who already have a license are grandfathered and with the exception that it is now $48/year; can renew yearly. The new rules referred to in the article are applicable to new applicants not holding a current license. I just went through the procedure today, Jan 25/10. No change from last year.   Read more...

Snowbird Extravaganza for "Mature Lifestyles"

Prolonged Stays in the USA/Homeland Security/Income Taxes
Posted date : May 27, 2010.
I am not sure that the advice you gave William in B.C. is correct regarding prolonged stays in the U.S. with respect to consequences from the U.S. government. There appear to be two issues and two major U.S. agencies at stake here. One is the verbal B2 visa (Homeland Security), which is violated in any one calendar year if you exceed 183 days in the U.S. This could have some dire consequences if you do stay beyond this number of days as you point out.   Read more...

Cross Border Car Purchasing
Posted date : May 27, 2010.
Since I have a condo in Florida, I wonder if I can buy a car there and use it in Canada as my normal car, without having to make any transfer. This means that I would have to immatriculate my car in Florida and get insurance there. Would that be correct for the Canadian authorities? If it's possible, that would be great because the price of used cars in the U.S. is a whole lot cheaper than in Canada.   Read more...

Thanks for the e-mail with the information as to location and dates for your winter show/gathering in Greater Phoenix. I have attended in past years, and intend to do so again this year. You may want to consider adding the state of Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to the exhibitors for your show in Arizona. The state of Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles has available, AT NO CHARGE (if age 65 or over) an Arizona identification card with your picture on it. You simply have to go into a DMV office, present your passport, and they will issue the card - good for six months...   Read more...

American ZIP Code Tip
Posted date : May 27, 2010.
Thanks for the information on the Florida SunPass. When registering online, the system asks for the zip code for both the home address and the credit card mailing address. It does not accept Canadian six-character postal codes so to override this, just enter the three numeric characters of your postal code followed by 99. It works. (My postal code is "V7E 3X9", so I enter "73999.") This also works at all gas pumps that ask for your credit card "zip code."   Read more...
